Growing up in California, Antony felt himself to be the consummate outsider until he came face to face with the ikon of Boy George on the cover of the Culture Club's 1982 debut record album, Smooching to Be Clever. He relocated to New York City in 1990, where he establish a earthly concern more accepting of his van sensibilities and sexually ambiguous nature. He created the nightspot ensemble Blacklips and modeled himself afterward Gloomy Velvet-era Isabella Rossellini and the drag queen that graced the cover of Soft Cell's 1982 unmarried "Torch." He formed Antony and the Johnsons and released their self-titled debut on David Tibet's Durtro label in 2000, followed by an appearance on the Lou Reed albums The Raven and Creature Serenade -- he toured with Reed as well end-to-end 2003. He has as well appeared in the Steve Buscemi picture show show Brute Factory as an androgynous convict. Antony and the Johnsons released a series of EPs in 2004, followed by the band's sec full-length, I Am a Bird Now, in February of 2005.

New York Times Examines New Ovarian Cancer Test

The clinical laboratory company LabCorp is offering a new blood test aimed at detection ovarian cancer the Crab at an early and still treatable stage, merely the test is organism met with concern among many physicians and medical organizations, the New York Times reports. According to the Times, the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists issued a statement saying it did non believe the test, called OvaSure, had been validated enough for routine use. The Times reports that a number of sophisticated diagnostic tests are entering the mart and beingness used as the basis for crucial treatment decisions. The article also notes that the debut of OvaSure raises the query of whether greater regulation of symptomatic tests is needed. OvaSure was non reviewed by FDA because the agency does not regulate tests developed and performed by a single laboratory. However, FDA in an Aug. 7 varsity letter sent to LabCorp that was posted on the FDA site asked LabCorp for a discussion on OvaSure's test results and research data, saying that the company "is offering a high-risk test that has non received tolerable clinical establishment and may harm the public health," the Times reports.

The essay was developed at Yale University and has been offered by LabCorp since late June. According to the Times, the test measures the level of six proteins in profligate samples, some produced from a tumour and others produced by the body's reaction to the neoplasm. The test then calculates a probability that the woman has ovarian crab. The test correctly classified 221 of 224 blood samples taken from women with ovarian cancer or from controller groups, according to a study published in the February issue of the journal Clinical Cancer Research. The study also ground that the test's untrue positive charge per unit was 0.6% and that 95% of cancers were identified. However, according to Beth Karlan, managing director of the Women's Cancer Research Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, there were few samples from women with early stages of the virtually deadly type of ovarian cancer and, therefore, the samples tried did non adequately represent what mightiness be ground in routine screening (New York Times, 8/26).

Steven TylerThe Lakers aren't the only team that can draw the big names!

Steven Tyler -- fresh off a trip to rehab he blamed on foot pain (*cough, cough* bulls**t) -- is courtside for tonight's Lakers vs. Cetlics game.

We're hearing he's out of rehab, but still undergoing outpatient treatment. Sounds like a good deal to us!

Universal Studios fire sparked by blow torch

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A fire that burned through a large swath of the Universal Studios Hollywood back lot during the weekend was accidentally sparked by workers using heating tools on a film set, fire officials said on Monday.

The blaze erupted before dawn on Sunday in a portion of the lot containing exteriors used to resemble a New York City streetscape. It reduced a two-city-block area of the lot to ashes and burned through much of the adjacent Courthouse Square set that has appeared in such films as "Back to the Future" and "To Kill a Mockingbird."

Also destroyed was the popular "King Kong" attraction featured in the Universal Studios Theme Park tram tour of the back lot, and a warehouse where thousands of copies of archived TV shows and films were stored. Studio officials said all of the material lost in the video vault could be replaced.

More than 400 firefighters battled the flames late into the night. Nine firefighters and a deputy sheriff suffered minor injuries, Los Angeles County Fire Chief P. Michael Freeman said at a news conference.

He said an investigation revealed the fire was touched off by three members of a studio work crew who had been using a blow torch to apply asphalt shingles to the roof of a building facade.

They finished their work at about 3 a.m. and stood watch for an hour, according to company policy. Seeing no signs of a fire, they left the scene for a break, but a security guard in the vicinity noticed flames about 45 minutes later and called the fire department.

The fire, which burned for about 18 hours, forced authorities to close the theme park for the day, but the facility was reopened to tourists on Monday morning.

Much of the same area scorched by Sunday's blaze had been destroyed by a 1990 arson fire and was subsequently rebuilt.

Malawi court approves Madonna adoption

LILONGWE, Malawi (Reuters) - A Malawian court on Wednesday formally approved pop star Madonna's adoption of a baby boy she took home from an orphanage in the impoverished southern African nation, a lawyer for the singer said.

Madonna's bid to assume parental rights over David Banda has been highly controversial with critics accusing the government of skirting laws that prohibit non-residents from adopting children in Malawi, which has been badly hit by the AIDS epidemic.

"We are very happy with what the judge has ruled. It is a positive and beautiful judgment that will have an impact on Malawi's adoption laws," Madonna's Malawian lawyer, Alan Chinula, told Reuters.

The High Court judge issued the ruling privately in chambers in Lilongwe in the company of lawyers. It was expected to be made public later on Wednesday.

Madonna said last week the controversy had been difficult to deal with but she was happy to be involved in a case that might pave the way for more adoptions in Malawi. An estimated 1 million children in the country have been orphaned by AIDS.

Chinula said the ruling also recommended that Malawi speed up amendments to its laws, which prevent adoptions by non-residents. The government had provided a waiver to the pop singer.

Malawi's Human Rights Commission, an independent, government-funded rights watchdog, had said the adoption, which began in 2006, would be illegal. The High Court delayed its ruling on the adoption last week to review a report by the commission.

The HRC report, a copy of which was obtained by Reuters, said the law made clear a person had to be in Malawi for at least 18 months to qualify as a resident. Madonna has not spent that long in the country.
